The 14th Conference on the Commemoration of Mulla Sadra
07.07.2010
In this Conference, which consisted of 4 sessions, a number of philosophy professors such as Dr. Reza Dawari, Dr. Karim Mujtahidi, Dr. Ali Sharia‘tmadari, and Dr. Gholamhossein Ibrahimi Dinani presented their papers.
Professor Seyyed Mohammed Khamenei, the President of the Sadra Islamic Philosophy Research Institute, said in the keynote speech of the Conference entitled “Philosophical Training of Today’s Youth” as follows:
Philosophy must be at the service of the youth who have to follow a long and difficult path without a guide. The philosophical training of young people should be such to lead them to a point where their talents are flourished. This philosophical training does not mean being trapped among complicated philosophical problems; rather, it means following the truth and learning about the realities of the world in man’s being.
He continued that we also observe such a philosophical training of the youth in the Qur’an. For example, in Luqman chapter, this divine sage teaches his son (the youth of those times) like a philosopher, and this training is initially theoretical. Two points are emphasized in these teachings: being kind to parents and not being cruel to oneself, in other words, not to behave against Qur’anic and human principles.
He also maintained that the world of being has three layers: the world of sensibles, the world of images, and the world of intellects. There is also a similar three-fold classification about human beings.
Upon going through childhood, the youth goes beyond the layer of sensibles and reaches the world of imagination. However, in order to attain wisdom and intellect, he requires a teacher and philosophy. Philosophy and a wise philosopher are responsible for the training of human beings, in general, and the youth, in particular. This is because, given their high level of flexibility and talents, the youth are in need of training and education.
The importance of the training of human beings lies in the fact that each person exercises some influence on a society and generation. He is different from an animal, which, if not following the natural and Godly principles, will ultimately work to the disadvantage of a few animals around itself. A human being truly affects the future generations in the light of his acts.
The president of the Sadra Islamic Philosophy Research Institute finished his speech by pointing out that, apart from the youth, society also requires an administrator in order to attain secondary perfection. The government has the duty to find a wise administrator, and philosophers are responsible for teaching philosophy and wisdom. The primary perfection of a society is attained through forming a government and granting a system and order to it. Nevertheless, this is not enough for the perfection of a society, and it should seek help from philosophy to reach its end and develop secondary perfection.
