Editorial of Issue 91 of Kheradname-ye Sadra
by Ayatullah Seyyed Mohammed Khamenei
on the Occasion of Ibn Sina Day
22.12.2018
On the occasion of 23rd August,
which is called Ibn Sina Day after this prominent
Iranian scientist and philosopher, Ayatullah Seyyed
Mohammed Khamenei, President of the Sadra Islamic
Philosophy Research Institute, wrote in the Editorial of
Issue 91 of Kheradname-ye Sadra Quarterly as follows:
Some time ago, Ankara University
School of Medicine in Turkey, due to their government’s
wrong policies and cultural poverty, which is rooted in
their country’s separation from the body of Islamic
culture, introduced Ibn Sina as a “Turkish” philosopher
and as belonging to Turkey in the course of a series of
propaganda activities. They also erected his statue at
the center of this University and presented him as a
Turkish philosopher to their own nation and to the other
nations of the world. According to one of the news
agencies of Turkey, there is going to be a commemoration
ceremony for Ibn Sina in 200 countries all over the
world in July 2018 with the cooperation of a number of
embassies and international organizations.
Unfortunately, and surprisingly
enough, the Turkish government has done this to a figure
who was originally an Iranian philosopher. In fact, Ibn
Sina was born in Greater Khorasan in Bukhara, which was
a city under the sovereignty of the official government
of Iran. He spent all his life in Iran in Ray, Hamadān,
and some other cities. While teaching and spreading
knowledge (in the fields of philosophy, gnosis, logic,
mathematics, medicine, astronomy, and many other
sciences of that time), Ibn Sina was appointed as Grand
Viser (Prime Minister) to Prince Emir Shams al-Dawlah of
the Buyid dynasty. He also attended the courts of some
other Iranian Shi’ah governments and guided them to
employ practical wisdom and ethics in their rule over
the country. The Turkish government has done the same
about Jalal al-Din Mawlānā Khorasani (Rumi). Fate has
placed his grave in a land which was once a part of
Iran, and where people spoke Persian. That is why they
introduce him as a Turkish poet and as a member of
Turkish nation. They also try to introduce the Sama
ceremony of Iranian Sufis as a part of native Turkish
culture so that, in this way, they could disguise their
historical cultural poverty and keep their heads up
through stealing the historical heritage of other
nations! The Sadra Islamic Philosophy Research Institute
and all the academic centers that are concerned about
Iran and Iranology condemn this recent charade of the
Turkish government the same as their previous masquerade
and expect the authorities of this country to take the
proper and effective action in this regard. However, the
factors underlying the repetition of such misconduct
need to be analyzed and investigated.
One of the reasons behind such
ominous events is the weak insight and management of the
governments before and after the Islamic Revolution in
our country. This has dared the neighboring countries to
rob us of our historical legacies. Ibn Sina was a unique
sage and philosopher in the history of the world and was
a master of all the sciences of his time, including
mathematics, astronomy, physics, and medicine.
Nevertheless, the authorities in our country merely
praise him for medical knowledge and simply introduce
him to Iranians and other nations of the world as a
urinal carrying physician. It has even been reported
that his image has been removed from the cover of health
insurance cards. Therefore, it is not strange that some
people consider him to be Turkish and perhaps even a
Gurid or Mongol in future! It is also possible that, in
the same way that some Arabs consider Khayyam to be an
Arab poet and scholar, some introduce Ibn Sina as an
Arab for a number of ridiculous reasons.
Cultural legacies, a brilliant
history, a long-standing civilization, and exporting it
to the world are the origins of the glory of nations.
Such treasures must be studied and safeguarded, and the
Iranian nation, as testified by history, enjoys grand
national glory and magnificence. Therefore, the
authorities in the country must greatly appreciate this
station and pay it the kind of attention and respect
that it truly deserves. Moreover, those who loot the
cultural heritage and historical honors and achievements
of other nations are warned that no nation can ever
attain national glory and a brilliant history through
robbing the Iranian nation from its cultural and
historical heritage and committing prohibited acts. Such
a misconduct, conversely, demonstrates the historical
weakness, poverty, and inferiority of that nation and is
a mark of their dishonor.
